Free: Aqualillies Summer Watershow

The splashy troupe will once again honor the birthday of the great Esther Williams, in Hollywood.

If you know your Tinseltown icons, then you probably know that cinematic swimming sensation Esther Williams was born on Aug. 8, 1921.

Prior to her auspicious arrival, people had enjoyed taking a refreshing dip, of course, and frolicking in the H2O, and somersaulting beneath the water's surface, and all the pursuits that pool lovers still adore today.

But Ms. Williams heightened the aquatic arts, and brought, via her astounding abilities and beloved films, a spirit of elegant movement, and dance, and gracefulness to a space where many of us simply glug-glug our way through laps.

The Aqualillies, those SoCal-based synchronized specialists of waterborne ballet, keep the memory of Ms. Williams dear to their hearts as they perform in fancy pools here and far from here.

And to honor their idol, on the very day of her birth, the Aqualillies perform a free summer show each year, a come-one-come-all affair built on old Hollywood glamour, athletic prowess, and warm-season'd sweetness.

The date? It's always Aug. 8, which is a Tuesday in 2017, and the location is The Hollywood Roosevelt, a starry spot befitting the movie-famous legacy of the honoree.

The Aqualillies Summer Watershow is free to see, there's a cash bar near the pool, and The Aquawillies — they're the "all-male team" associated with the 'Lillies — will put in a special performance, too.

Speaking of the cash bar, check it out: USA Synchro is the night's beneficiary, so 10% of that cocktail you buy? It'll help support "...the training of our national synchronized swimming athletes."

There's an afterparty, too, at the hotel's new hangout, The Rosy Oyster.

So buy a beverage and raise it to Esther Williams, her start as a competitive swimmer, and her singular legacy in splash-worthy cinema. She passed away in 2013, but her ability to weave swim skills into a Technicolor Hollywood tale remains forever legendary.

To show that legend some love, and the Aqualillies, and the Aquawillies, too, make sure you're poolside at The Hollywood Roosevelt by 7 p.m. on Aug. 8, the birthday of a shining, swimming star.

And while you're in Hollywood, consider visiting the Esther Williams Walk of Fame star. It's located on the east side of Vine Street, just a bit south of Selma Avenue.
