Officers Shoot Man Who Tried to Ram Stolen SUV Into Officers, Police Say

A man who allegedly backed a stolen SUV into Buena Park police during a traffic stop was fatally shot by officers Monday in neighboring Fullerton.

The officer-involved shooting was reported at 11:37 a.m. at Gilbert Street and Moore Avenue, just blocks east of Fullerton's border with Buena Park, said Fullerton police Lt. Jon Radus.

Buena Park officers were attempting to pull over the driver of a Range Rover for traffic violations at the time, Radus said. The officers were advised during the stop that the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier Monday in Anaheim, he said.

"As the vehicle yielded, it then went into reverse and rammed the officers as they were getting out of their vehicle,'' triggering the officer-involved shooting, Radus said.

There were no reports of injuries to any police officers.

The officers had body-worn cameras, as did their vehicle, and investigators will review the video, Radus said.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office will investigate, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.

The shooting came hours after a retired faculty member at California State University Fullerton was stabbed to death on campus. The shooting and stabbing were unrelated, police said.
