GRAPH: California Sea Lion Strandings 2004-2015

The number of sea lion pups stranded in California beaches rose sharply at the start of 2015, according to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"California sea lions can strand for a number of reasons including injury, illness, and weather and/or ocean conditions," according to the report, which said areas in Southern California where the pups have been found stranded include Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Using NOAA data, the chart below shows the number of sea lion strandings reported in California from January to April in each of the years indicated, from 2004 thru April 13 of 2015.
