Gaslamp District Keeps Party Alive Despite Blackout

An estimated five million people were without power across California, Arizona and Mexico.

The party atmosphere in San Diego's Gaslamp District Thursday night provided a much needed distraction for all the people left in the dark by a widespread power outage.

An estimated five million people were without power across California, Arizona and Mexico.  Power officials said it likely could be traced to utility work in Arizona, although they were unsure why the outage was not contained to that area.

The power outage stranded drivers who could not fill up their gas tanks because gas stations could not operate for several hours.

Those who still had gas in their tanks had to be extra careful as they drove through the Gaslamp District with all the traffic lights that were out.

Despite the blackout, some stores stayed open to accommodate cash customers but only let a few in at a time.  Police in San Diego also hit the streets to keep an eye out for possible looters.
