Getty Hours: Extended for Summer

Both the Villa and Center will stay open later on Fridays and Saturdays.

A sprinkler, a Popsicle, a dragonfly bouncing on the bough of a jacaranda tree? These are all pretty darn Summertime(tm), in addition to the thousand other signs of the coconut oil-scented, lazy-lovely season.

But another major marker of the brighter-later time of year, at least 'round Brentwood and Malibu, involves art, and music, and gardens, and sunsets.

Surely we are not-so-subtly referring to The Getty Center and The Getty Villa here, and surely we're about to touch upon something that fans of both wildly/highly regarded institutions have come to love: Weekend hours that push into the night from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend.

By "weekend" here we do mean Friday and Saturday — Sunday, for all accounts and so forth, is still a school night in the summertime — and by "push into the night" we mean 9 o'clock, which isn't the wee smalls by any measure but is still fairly unusual on the museum scene.

The cost for your eveningtime art-admiring stroll-abouting? We won't type this in all caps, though it is shout-worthy: Nothing. As always, you enter both institutions for free/nada dollars, though parking fees remain. Here's one more "though," though: The parking price drops to ten bucks after 3 in the afternoon.

Of quick note: The Getty Center is open on Independence Day, while The Getty Villa is shuttered on the Fourth of July. In fact, The Getty Center is always closed on Mondays, while The Getty Villa takes its day away on Tuesdays. Keep that in mind as Labor Day draws near.

What's on? So much. "Thomas Annan: Photographer of Glasgow" is showing at The Getty Center, while many of The Getty Villa's celebrated antiquities are on view. (The museum is "...currently being reimagined," with some gallery closures, so do note that before making for Malibu.)
