Go Deep, Divers, for a Splashy Aquarium Fest

Enjoy "educational presentations and dive demonstrations" at the Aquarium of the Pacific.

What to Know

  • Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach
  • Saturday, March 9
  • Free to divers showing certification and ID

Walk into the Aquarium of the Pacific, in Long Beach.

Pause to admire the "anatomically correct fiberglass" blue whale that dominates the entrance — look up, as "swims" below the ceiling — as well as the other fun features you can see around the Great Hall of the Pacific.

And what's that, at the far end?

Why it's the aquarium's famous Honda Blue Cavern, a massive tank that holds oodles of H2O dwellers, including giant sea bass, moray eels, and the occasional sea turtle, too.

And, yes, even a human now and then, in the form of a diver. These wet-suited superstars can attract as much attention, from fascinated guests, as the sealife, and they're known for feeding demos and fact-sharing sessions, too.

It's cool, super-way-cool, in fact, which is one reason why the aquarium celebrates these air-tanked below-the-wavers at a special event, each and every year.

That event is called Divers Day, and there are several facets to it, including the chance to enjoy both "educational presentations and dive demonstrations."

When will this submersive celebration happen? Glub-glub: It's all diving deeper on Saturday, March 9.

Oodles of dive-oriented organizations will swim for the ocean-adjacent structure, all to share what they know about what's happening in diving today.

And if you've wanted to try out volunteer diving — hundreds of divers do volunteer for the aquarium, in fact, as well as other Pacific-loving outfits around town — this is the place to learn more.

What's the cost to enter?

This may fill your mind with bubbles and make you feel as though you're free-floating: If you show up with your certification, plus, of course, that all-important identification, you'll enter Divers Day for free.

No need to show with your fins or tanks, just your love of the pursuit, your desire to learn more, and an enthusiasm for connecting with others who love the ocean, and its beautiful array of critters, like you do.
