Police Raising Funds for Single Mother Severely Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash

Detectives investigating a hit-and-run crash in South Los Angeles that severely injured a single mother are raising funds via the GoFundMe website to cover her rent while she recovers.

Maria Torres was crossing Denker Street in the crosswalk with her children about 10 p.m. Nov. 12 when a black older-model Honda went through a red light and struck her and her 11-year-old son, according to the Los Angeles Police Department's South Traffic Division.

Torres was dragged underneath the vehicle about 60 yards, breaking both legs, wrists and arms, her back, ribs and collar bone and suffering multiple lacerations all over her body, investigators said. Her son escaped serious injury.

Witnesses told police the suspect, who remains at large, stuck his middle finger out of the driver's window as he drove off at a high rate of speed.

Torres has been unable to work due to her injuries, so the South Traffic Division set up the fundraising page to keep the family from being evicted from their $850-per-month rental unit, with $1,535 of the $5,000 goal met so far.
