Caught on Video: Struggle for Control of Greyhound Bus After Driver Attack

The January attack in the desert west of Phoenix led to a crash that injured more than 20 people

Newly released surveillance video shows an attack on a Greyhound bus driver that led to a struggle for control of the vehicle before it crashed in the western Arizona desert, injuring more than 20 people.

The video shows the attacker rush toward the front of the bus as it traveled from Los Angeles on Interstate 10 during the early morning of Jan. 23. Interior lights were off and many passengers were sleeping as the man stormed past and grabbed the steering wheel.

Passengers soon came to the driver's aid, attempting to subdue the attacker and regain control of the bus, which was traveling about 70 mph.

A second forward-facing camera shows the darkened freeway ahead as the bus began to veer off the road and into a dirt median. Passengers were knocked back into their seats when the bus struck an object in the median.

The man repeatedly punched the bus driver in the face as the victim yelled for passengers to help, witnesses said. The passengers -- about 45 were aboard the bus -- and driver stopped the bus from entering oncoming traffic, according to investigators.

A 25-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested in the attack after he and his girlfriend ran into the desert, according to authorities. He was found incompetent to stand trial and remains in custody.
