Handmade Finds: Echo Park Craft Fair

Make for the Mack Sennett Studios for oodles of awesome, handmade, one-of-a-kind buys created by local artisans.

Live in Southern California long enough and you're going to meet a host of creative spirits, the inspired people who work not only in the entertainment industry but also in a whole line-up of imagination-based, sky's-the-limit callings.

You, in fact, may be such a creator, or you might love one or call a painter or jewelry designer or baker a neighbor. So to call the making of handmade goods, and art, and wearables, and edibles kind of the local way of life 'round Los Angeles is playing down how much people do create here, and what good things are made.

The Echo Park Craft Fair is a primo, dream-filled example of all of this marvelous makery. More than 120 artists show up at the started-in-2009 event, a spectacular that highlights some of the best artisans working in SoCal today.

And the Spring Fair is just ahead, at the Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake, one of our region's original creative spaces. The dates? Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14, so if your mom loves browsing earrings, bags, belts, and lots more, a fair stop-by would be a beauteous Mother's Day outing.

Tickets are $10 per day, though a weekend pass is $16.

As for what you can expect to see on the tables? Think "ceramics to jewelry, perfumery to clothing design, woodworking to fabric art." The 2017 artist roster includes Edible Gardens LA, Four Leaf Wood Shop, Moon Canyon Flowers, PAX Ceramics, and Ursa Major Jewelry.

Expect "two massive soundstages," soundstages that once held some of moviedom's early silent stars, full of great goods and the talented makers who thought them up (and then followed through and made them, beautifully).
