Hawthorne Police Shoot Suspect Who Fled, Pointed Gun: Authorities

Detectives were on scene investigating the shooting Saturday

A man who led Hawthorne police on a vehicle pursuit and a foot chase pointed a gun at his pursuers and was shot Saturday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The officer-involved shooting occurred in the 13000 block of Doty Avenue (map).The shooting was reported at 10:13 a.m.

Hawthorne Police Department officers attempted to stop the suspect for a traffic violation, but he sped away, driving erratically, according to a report from the sheriff's department Saturday evening.

The suspect's car was stopped by police, but the man ran from officers on foot.

They unsuccessfully attempted to use a Taser on him, the report said. As he ran, "he turned toward the officers and pointed a handgun at them," the press release said.

Then, officers shot him. No details were given about the number of shots or officers who fired.

The suspect ran a short distance before collapsing with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated at a local hospital and is "expected to survive." His gun was recovered at the scene, the report stated.

The suspect's name was not released.

One officer required stitches for a cut above his eye after he fell while chasing the suspect.

The investigation, being conducted by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, is continuing.
