A hearing took place Wednesday to determine the fate of two pit bulls that attacked a 76-year-old man, who later died of his injuries, and killed his small dog.
The attack occurred Feb. 2 around 5:20 p.m. in the 2600 block of North Lincoln Park Avenue, about a block from Valentin Herrera's home, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Herrera's extensive injuries from the attack included a brain injury. He was taken off life support and died Monday, according to his son, Luis Herrera. His dog, Dodger, also died at the scene of the attack.
Luis Herrera said his family wants Los Angeles Animal Services officials to euthanize the dogs, but will leave it up to the city to decide.
"I feel bad for the dogs, because I'm a dog lover, but I don't want them to do it to somebody else," Herrera told NBC4.
No final decision will be made Wednesday. After hearing statements, the hearing examiner has up to 30 days to make a recommendation to the general manager. If the dogs are proven to be dangerous, they will be euthanized.
