Camera Hidden in Smoke Alarm in Orange County Airbnb, Customer Says

A Santa Ana couple was horrified after finding a hidden camera while staying at an Airbnb in Orange County.

They said what looked like a smoke detector over the bed was really a hidden camera.

Christian Aranda says the owner acknowledged there was a camera, but said that it was not recording.

"She just said that they were off, and I was like, 'it doesn't matter if they're off! They shouldn't be there in the first place pointing at the bed,'" Aranda said.

Airbnb reportedly gave the couple a refund and the listing is no longer on the website.

"The safety and privacy of our community - both online and offline - is our priority," Airbnb said in a statement. "Airbnb's policies prohibit hidden cameras in listings, and we take reports of any violations very seriously."

"We promptly removed this host from our platform and completely refunded Ms. Salas and Mr. Aranda based on the information reported," they continued. "There have been more than 500 million guest arrivals in Airbnb listings to date and negative incidents are incredibly rare."

This statement comes just days after a piece was published in The Atlantic, which detailed numerous stories of guests encountering hidden cameras while staying in an Airbnb.

NBC4 also reached out to Garden Grove police, but has not received word back.
