One Killed in South LA Hit-and-Run Crash

The driver of a Land Rover Discovery II SUV continued east on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after the crash

A man in his 30s was crossing a South Los Angeles street was killed early Monday when he was struck by the driver of a sport utility vehicle in a hit-and-run crash.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene in the 4700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (map). Witnesses said the driver of the sport utility vehicle -- described as a champagne or gold color 1999-2002 Land Rover Discovery II -- continued east on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The victim's identity will not be released by police until his next of kin is notified. Police said they believe the victim was in a crosswalk at the time he was struck.

The crash was reported at about 1 a.m.

The SUV involved in the collision probably has front-end damage to the driver's side, according to Los Angeles police.

Last month, the Los Angeles Police Department presented a report on LA hit-and-run crashes to the Public Safety Committee. The report, which included data between Jan. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2011, indicated there were more than 18,800 reported hit-and-run crashes during that time period.

That figure included 759 involving pedestrians, 22 of which were fatal. More than 500 hit-and-run crashes involving cyclists were reported, including four fatalities.
