Right now, someone in Southern California is poring over a map, trying to figure out how to reach the next buzzed-about spread of poppy-lush amazingness.

After all, it is the first week of spring, and the orange-bright superstar of the wildflower world is still going strong in several nearby spots.

But what if the spot you had in mind was much, much closer? As in, your own backyard?

Poppies can and do grow in our neighborhoods, and behind our buildings, and in front of our homes, too. And to help out poppy people, as well as everyone who is fully obsessed with Golden State flora, there is the Theodore Payne Foundation, which specializes all sorts of plants that grow well around our area.

March 23, in fact, is Poppy Day at the Sun Valley hub for horticulture, which means that flower fans'll be able to score 10% off not only plants but seeds, too.

If you're a member of Theodore Payne? You'll save 15% on your garden-cool purchase.

It's a place with the "... region's largest and most interesting selection of California flora," so expect to find some other amazing plantable wonders for your sure-to-be-glorious garden.

And, just maybe, next year, when everyone is going gaga over wildflowers and where to find them, you can tell your pals, "hey, want to see the poppies in my yard?"

Throwing your own poppy party may be all the rage in 2020.

What should you show up with, on March 23, besides money to buy seeds and such? Wagons are a-ok, as are boxes to hold all of your flowery finds.
