Horse Trapped Upside-Down in Ravine Rescued

The animal was uninjured after being trapped in a ditch for more than three hours after slipping during a ride

Twenty firefighters worked for several hours Tuesday night to free a horse that became wedged upside-down in a small trench in Hesperia.

A rider was with the horse near Elm Street and Alta Mesa Road when the animal fell and became trapped on its back in the 4 feet deep trench at the base of a 20- to 30-foot ravine, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

The man was uninjured and remained with the horse.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department heavy rescue team responded to the animal, and was later joined by the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department Large Animal Rescue Team.

They were able to hoist it out of the crevice in about three hours, freeing it just before 11 p.m.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department tweeted that the horse was able to walk into its trailer unassisted after being checked out by a veterinarian.
