Planning on making a lot of marinara, salads, or sandwiches? Get to Moorpark and pick-your-own bounty of sauce-ready goodness.

DO YOU PYO? Then you are the sort of cook and/or eater who delights in plucking blueberries off bushes and apples from trees. There's a lot of PYO-ing, or pick-your-own-ing, if you prefer, around Southern California, thanks to the bountiful seasonal produce offerings at our area farms. And one of the goodie-laden go-tos, throughout a sizable portion of the calendar, is Underwood Family Farms of Moorpark and Somis. You may have left with a basket full of leeks or lemons or cucumbers or strawberries in months or years gone by, but if you know the later part of summer, and what's looking ripe around Labor Day Weekend, then you know that it is time for Underwood's popular...

PICK-YOUR-OWN ROMA TOMATOES EVENT: This isn't to say that the many other fruits and vegetables that pop up on the Underwood schedule aren't also loved, but there's something about Roma tomatoes weekend that speaks to marinara mavens, salad pros, and anyone who adores eating these delightful orbs of fruit-tastic deliciousness straight, no olive oil or salt required. It's a popular event, and it'll last over two days, so make your way to Moorpark on Saturday, Sept. 1 or Sunday, Sept. 2. You can get a box there, for two bucks, to hold your heap o' tomatoes, but you are welcome to show with your own containers (just read what Underwood advises before leaving home).

MORE TO KNOW? Yep, like the per-pound price (thirty cents) and the hours each day (think "early start," for sure). Read the details here, dear Roma buffs, and start planning all of the amazing eats you'll be topping with tomatoes. And will you can a few, too, for wintertime enjoyment? Start dreaming up all of the flavorful ways you can use this highly red, highly juicy, perfect-on-everything fruit.
