It's a Free National Parks Day, in Honor of Public Lands

Fee-charging parks around the system will waive entrance fees on Sept. 22.

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN... since you said "howdy" to Yosemite National Park's Half Dome or told the boulders of Joshua Tree National Park how beautiful they are? Have you loved all of the millions of glorious details, some thermal hot, inside Lassen Volcanic National Park? And what of Death Valley National Park? Have you been filled with delight at Devil's Corn Field or blown a kiss to the Panamint Mountains during an especially captivating sunset? There are so many must-dos on this particular list, one that is clearly themed to California's national parks. After all, the Golden State has the most national parks in the NPS system, so deciding where to go, and what to adore, and all of the pursuits to pursue while there can overwhelm. But a free day should help your plan, and one is on approach, on...

SATURDAY, SEPT. 22: That's National Public Lands Day, and those parks within the National Park System that ask for an entrance fee will wave bye-bye to it for the day, all day long, as they waive your fee at the gate or ranger station. Of course, some parks don't ever charge fees, like Redwood National Park, but Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, and others do. What's going on within each epic spot? Ranger talks, lots of walks, and places to explore on your own, from canyons to peaks. It's also the day when summer melds into fall, which feels like a ripe day for being outdoors and pondering the changing seasons. Find your park now, and start planning for the final free day of 2018, which will happen on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
