Join South Coast Botanic Garden's Great Pumpkin Hunt

Spend a fall day at the Palos Verdes destination and keep your goggles peeled for gourds.

What to Know

  • Palos Verdes
  • Through Nov. 30
  • General admission

Generalizing? Never a good idea.

Making sweeping pronouncements? Same deal: It's best not to do.

But to say, with confidence, that most people rather like a perfect autumn-like afternoon, where the sunlight is doing that golden-crisp beamy thing, and the air is neither too warm nor too cold, and each breeze is a hair-tossling, skin-tingling gift, should squash any doubt that everyone loves a fine fall day.

And doubt not that the season of fine fall days and the seeking of squashes is here, and very much so at South Coast Botanic Garden.

Is there are traditional pumpkin patch at the Palos Verdes destination?

There is not, so you'll need to buy your gourd at one of the other patchy spots currently springing up around Southern California.

LA says goodbye to the iconic Conga Room

Is there a playful opportunity to stroll the 87-acre expanse, all while searching for various birdhouses, which will possess clues, which will eventually lead you to a "hidden pumpkin garden"?

That's the plan, pumpkin people, and one that's very much built around fresh air, flowers, trees, and being outdoors in the autumn.

And the Great Pumpkin Hunt, South Coast Botanic Garden's annual falltime happening, will last for much of autumn, too: The final 2018 date is the last day in November.

It's a seasonal excursion that involves exercise, curiosity, and digging the outdoors. And while you won't leave with a pumpkin, you will leave knowing you had a genteel adventure, a nice bookend to some of the season's scarier fare.
