Motorcyclist Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver on 10 Freeway

A man died Sunday after being flung off his motorcycle and struck by a hit-and-run driver, authorities said.

The accident happened at about 4:51 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway, just east of La Brea Avenue, after the 43-year-old motorcyclist driving on the collector road "made an unsafe turning movement to the left" and struck a raised center median between the main portion of the freeway and the collector road, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was flung off his bike and into the No. 4 lane of the freeway, where an oncoming vehicle struck and killed him, the CHP said.

A woman driving a Toyota Corolla swerved to avoid the downed man and ended up striking the motorcycle, rupturing the bike's fuel tank and causing both it and her own car to catch fire, the highway patrol said.

A man driving a BMW then struck the debris left behind in the accident, causing "minor damage" to his car's left tires.

Neither the Toyota driver nor the BMW driver sustained injuries, the CHP said.

The crash caused an hours-long closure of the eastbound 10 Freeway lanes between La Brea Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard.

Police are still searching for the hit-and-run driver who struck the motorcyclist, but they do not have a description of the driver's car. Anyone with information is asked to call the Los Angeles Communication Center at 323-343-0512.
