For years, hikers have made their way into Runyon Canyon via an easy trail off Solar Drive near Mulholland, which winds past a 9,000-square-foot mansion.
The new owners of the house, who declined to talk to NBC4, recently put up a fence and signs to warn hikers that they’ll soon close that section of the trail.
Hikers will be re-routed to a set of nearby stairs.
Although the stairs feed hikers into the canyon, the route is considerably more difficult than the existing one.
“I think it’s stupid,” hiker Tracy Elizabeth said of the situation. “This trail’s been here for years.”
The new stairs will make the hike especially difficult for those with small dogs, Elizabeth said.
Some concerned hikers have posted signs along the trail asking people to complain to the city.

The city of Los Angeles owns Runyon Canyon, but the section of trail due to close is on private property.
“This man has a right to do what he wants to do with his private property,” a less-concerned hiker said. “I don’t see the problem.”
LA City Councilman Tom LaBonge said he is trying to negotiate with the property owner to find a solution that works for everyone.
