Animal Shelters Kick Off Cat Days of Summer

As we wait to see if there will be a football season, we can all celebrate what is being dubbed "Kitten Season." Although it feels like every season is kitten season in the Internet era.

Los Angeles-based animal care agencies are calling the summer months, beginning in June, Kitten Season, because it is the time of year when thousands of newborn kittens fill animal shelters across the city.

"Cats are hearing the call of nature, because it’s spring, and getting pregnant and are having cute little babies," said Amiee Gilbreath, of Found Animals Foundation. "And they are flooding into shelters and in need of homes, so June is national 'Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month.'"

Found Animals, along with the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control, City of Los Angeles' Animal Services, SEAACA, and other Los Angeles-based animal care agencies, kicked off the celebration with a "Cat Days of Sumer" Adopt-a-Thon at 17 different locations across the LA area on Saturday.

If you missed the kick-off, don’t worry, Found Animals promises the promotions will continue throughout the summer months, including a special "buddy" promotion.

"Kittens do great in pairs, so we have another special deal called '2 for You!'" said Gilbreath. "If you want to take home two kittens, so they play with each other instead of with your drapes, you pay the adoption fees for the first one and we will pay the adoption fees for the second one."

The shelters are also looking for homes for dogs, bunnies and other animals.
