Long Beach Hiker Falls to Death on Mt. Baldy

The hiker was apparently traveling alone in an area known as Baldy Bowl

A Long Beach man who was hiking alone apparently fell to his death while hiking near Mount Baldy summit, according to San Bernardino County authorities.

Dominic Belletti, 60, had left home early home early in the morning Sunday, according to a brief statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.

Belletti was found dead in an area called Baldy Bowl "from an apparent unwitnessed fall" by other hikers at 10:45 a.m., according to the statement.

Baldy Bowl, south of the peak of Mount Baldy (also know as Mount San Antonio, map), is reached by a steep, strenuous trail that is often snowy and icy during winter, sometimes requiring crampons and an ice axe.

Sheriff's department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said no additional information about trail condition or Balletti's equipment was available on Monday due to the holiday. She said volunteers worked on the search for Balletti.

There was no answer at the Angeles National Forest's San Gabriel River Ranger District office on Monday.

The coroner division is investigating the death.
