Long Beach Marathon: From Extreme Heat to Road Closures

Road closures were set to start at 5 a.m. Sunday.

Thousands of runners battled the heat for 26.2 miles Sunday at the Long Beach Marathon.

Organizers gave the option for runners to begin early and took other precautions to assure safety during extreme weather conditions. .

The half marathon was set to start at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, but due to the heat, organizers allowed runners to start at 6 a.m. in cooler temperatures. 

Organizers said they would also increase water supply at 18 stations along the route and will have 10 misting stations.

Roughly 4,000 runners entered the marathon, and about 13,500 were set to race in the half-marathon.

Drivers would also face road closures and possible traffic jams in the Long Beach area.

The marathon route will use the following streets, and they will close at 5:00 a.m.:

Shoreline Drive will be closed in both directions from Shoreline Village Drive to the 710 Freeway. It will reopen at 10:00 a.m.

Shoreline Drive will be closed in both directions from Shoreline Village Drive to Ocean Blvd, reopening at 5:00 p.m.

Pine Avenue will be closed in both directions from Shoreline Drive to Seaside Way, reopening at 10:00 a.m.

Queensway Bridge will be closed on the northbound side from Ocean Boulevard to the 710 Freeway, reopening at 9:30 a.m.

Ocean Boulevard will be closed in both directions from Livingston Drive to 54th Street, reopening at 11:00 a.m.

Livingston Drive will be closed in both directions from Termino Avenue to Broadway, reopening at 1:15 p.m.

Nieto Avenue will be closed in both directions from Appian Way to Broadway, reopening at 1:00 p.m.

Appian Way will be closed in both directions from Nieto Avenue to Park Avenue, reopening at 12:30 p.m.

Park Avenue will be closed in both directions from Anaheim Street to Appian Way, reopening at 12:15 p.m.

6th Street will be closed in both directions from Park Avenue to Monrovia Avenue, reopening at 10:30 a.m.

Monrovia Avenue will be closed in both directions from 6th Street to 4th Street, reopening at 10:30 a.m.

4th Street will be closed in both directions from Monrovia Avenue to Orlena Avenue, reopening at 10:30 a.m.

Orlena Ave will be closed in both directions from Colorado Street to 4th Street, reopening at 10:30 a.m.

Colorado Avenue will be closed in both directions from Orlena Avenue to Appian Way, reopening at 10:30 a.m.

Marine Stadium will be closed in both directions from Nieto Avenue to Bayshore Avenue, reopening at 10:30 a.m.

Palo Verde will be closed on the southbound side from Atherton Street to Anaheim Street, reopening at 12:00 p.m.

Atherton Street will be closed on the westbound side from Clark Avenue to Bellflower Boulevard, reopening at 12:00 p.m.

Atherton Street will be closed in both directions from Bellflower Boulevard to Palo Verde Avenue, reopening at 12:15 p.m.

Clark Avenue will be closed on the northbound side from Atherton Street to Anaheim Street, reopening at 12:30 p.m.

Anaheim Street will be closed in both directions from PCH to Clark Avenue, reopening at 12:30 p.m.

Ocean Boulevard will be closed in both directions from Livingston Drive to Alamitos Avenue, reopening at 2:00 p.m.
