Sgt. Thomas R. MacPherson died during a patrol in Andar District, Afghanistan

A 26-year-old soldier from Long Beach was killed Friday in combat in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced on Sunday.

Sgt. Thomas R. MacPherson died in Andar District, Afghanistan, from small arms fire while on patrol during combat operations, according to a Department of Defense statement.

MacPherson was a Los Alamitos High graduate who enlisted in the Army in 2007.

He served as a mortarman and team leader, and was on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan.

He had also been deployed to Iraq.

MacPherson was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.
