The winning ticket in Friday’s massive, historic $640 million jackpot was sold about 3,000 miles away in Maryland, but it wasn’t all bad news for Californians.
Twenty-nine stores sold tickets that matched 5 numbers, and several of those were in SoCal,
Bluebird Liquor in Hawthorne kept up their mystique by selling a 5 for 5 ticket. Customers waited for hours in a line that stretched out the door and down Hawthorne Boulevard for a chance to get their Mega Millions ticket from the “lucky” shop.

Hollywood was even more electric than usual Friday night after word spread that Hollywood Bazaar on Hollywood Boulevard was among the 29 California sellers to dish out a lucky 5 for 5.
Even though store owners don’t earn a cut if they sell a ticket with five matching digits, they said it’s still good for business.
In many states, matching five numbers means the lucky ticket holders get $250,000. But in California it’s a little different.

Golden State rules dictate five-for-five pay outs are decided by how many tickets are sold, and how many people need to split the jackpot. Experts estimate they’ll likely cash in about $100,000.
The unprecedented jackpot brought people out in droves to try their luck, racking up about $14 million an hour in ticket sales, 32 cents of which goes to California public schools.
