A man who was allegedly armed with a hammer and reported to be threatening family members died Tuesday after being fatally shot by deputies in Lynwood, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 12:35 p.m. in the 3800 block of Lilita Street, according to the sheriff's department.
The man, who was not immediately identified, was struck at least once in the upper body and taken to a hospital with injuries of unknown severity. No deputies were injured.
The man later died at the hospital.
Sheriff's Lt. Brandon Dean told reporters at the scene that the call came in as a family disturbance, and the man, reported to be 44 years old, was possibly under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and threatening family members with a hammer.
The hammer was recovered after the shooting.
Streets were closed in the area and traffic was routed away from the scene while the shooting was investigated.

Some residents were later required to show identification before being allowed to return to their homes with a sheriff's escort.
