Father Suspected of Holding Infant Daughter Hostage Dead Following Hours-Long Standoff

He was armed with a knife as he held his 7-month-old daughter hostage inside a car, police said

A standoff in Covina between a 22-year-old man believed to be armed and holding his 7-month-old daughter with him in the car ended after several hours with the baby in police custody and the father dead.

Video from the scene showed police using a device that caused a cloud, possibly tear gas, and taking the baby from the white car. The suspect was shot and killed by police.

The child, about 7 months olds, was not injured.

The standoff at Wingate Park in the 700 block of North Glendora Avenue near East Wingate Street lasted approximately eight hours. It began after authorities responded to a report of a "suspicious vehicle." Officers responded and found a woman in the vehicle who told police she needed help.

The woman eventually got out of the vehicle, leaving a man and toddler girl inside. The man was armed with a knife, police said.

The unidentified man made threats to hurt himself, police said. Covina police negotiated with the suspect and summoned a mental evaluation team to assist a bid to accomplish a peaceful surrender prior to the shooting, Marquez said.

The man was struck by multiple rounds in the upper body, police said. He died at the scene.

No officers were injured.
