Man Charged in Knife Attack at Maywood Doughnut Store

A San Bernardino County man was charged on Friday with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing a 63-year-old man in an unprovoked attack at a doughnut shop in Maywood last month.

Arnold Gonzalez, 27, of Chino, was arrested Wednesday, five days after detectives from the sheriff's East Los Angeles station released surveillance video from the business, leading to his identification as the alleged attacker.

The video shows the suspect entering Yum Yum Donuts at the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Slauson Avenue about 3 p.m. Feb. 10, walking up behind the victim and stabbing him repeatedly in the back as the man stood at the counter.

Responding deputies found the victim with a knife lodged in his upper body, according to sheriff's Deputy Michele Sanchez.

The unidentified man was rushed to a hospital. An update on his condition was not available, but he was expected to survive.

"During the investigation, detectives also discovered the same suspect used the same weapon in other crimes after the Maywood incident," according to a sheriff's department statement. Details of those crimes were not released.

Gonzales pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder charge, which includes allegations that he used a knife during the commission of the crime and caused great bodily injury, and was ordered to remain jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.
