29-Year-Old Unarmed Man Killed in Venice Shooting, Police Say

An unarmed 29-year-old man was fatally wounded in a shooting in Venice Monday afternoon, police said.

The unarmed victim, identified by police as Lavell Harris, died at the scene of the shooting, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The shooting was reported about 3:30 p.m. in the area of Fifth Avenue and Broadway Street, according to the LAPD.

Neighbors reported hearing as many as four shots and saw a sedan speed away. Police said between two and four men fled the scene in a dark sedan.

"Homicides in this area are not very common," LAPD Lt. John Radtke said. "This is the first shooting homicide this year."

Witnesses reported a suspect fled in "a shiny sedan," according to the LAPD.

No details about what prompted the killing were immediately available.
