The girl was playing outside with a friend when a man grabbed her by the hair and tried to drag her away, police said

Police were searching for a man who apparently attempted to kidnap a 5-year-old girl as she played outside her home in Azusa on Monday night.

The girl was playing with a friend about 8:30 p.m. outside an apartment complex in the 500 block of Gladstone Street when a man grabbed her by the hair and tried to drag her away, the Azusa Police Department said.

The mother, who had turned away for a moment from watching her daughter, heard screaming, turned back and saw a man pulling the girl by the shirt. The woman yelled and chased off the man.

The girl was not hurt.

Police were checking to see if surveillance cameras may have captured the incident.
