Man in Custody on Suspicion of Killing 17-Year-Old Girl in San Pedro

A man was in custody Tuesday for allegedly killing a 17-year-old girl who was found shot to death in a car that crashed into a building in San Pedro, authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 2:30 a.m. June 18 at 783 West Sepulveda St., the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Kayla Huerta of Wilmington, who had a 3-year-old daughter, was found in the driver's seat of the car and died at the scene, authorities said.

Ms. Huerta was with a group of people in the 700 block of Sepulveda Street," an LAPD statement said. "The suspect was part of the group when he became upset at something that was said. The suspect then shot Ms. Huerta and fled the area on foot."

The investigation led to the arrest on Monday of Luis Aurelio Morales, 25, also from Wilmington, who was booked on suspicion of murder, according to the LAPD. Morales was held in lieu of $3 million bail, the sheriff's department reported.
