A now-dead gunman opened fire in Santa Monica Friday in a series of “random encounters,” slaying at least four people before being killed near the library of Santa Monica College.

Police believe the tragic shooting spree began with a house fire in the 2000 block of Yorkshire Avenue. Two bodies were found in the charred home.

The violence continued along Pico Boulevard, ultimately ending at Santa Monica College, where the suspect died on a sidewalk outside the library.
