Memorial Day Deaths Up Sharply

Traffic deaths were up sharply this Memorial Day weekend, with nearly four dozen people killed across the state, including 11 in Los Angeles County, according to the final holiday tally released today.

The 45 deaths occurred between 6:01 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

During last year's holiday, 38 people died in traffic accidents around the state, including eight in Los Angeles County.

In Orange County, three people lost their lives over the weekend. No one died on Orange County roadways during the same period last year.

DUI arrests were up slightly in Orange County -- 58 were arrested this year, compared to 56 last year.

In Los Angeles County, 248 drivers were arrested, compared with 260 last year. Across the state, 1,465 people were arrested for drunken driving, compared with 1,450 in 2008. Those figures do not include DUI arrests made by city police departments.
