Mother Charged With Abandoning Baby in Whittier Parking Lot

The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of six years in state prison if convicted as charged.

A felony child abuse charge was filed Wednesday against a 41-year-old woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a Whittier parking lot.

Dolores Adriana Cruz, a transient, entered a not guilty plea before a judge at the Downey courthouse. She remains in custody in lieu of $130,000 bail pending her next court date on Jan. 11.

On Dec. 22, a good Samaritan heard a baby crying near the 11600 block of Washington Boulevard and found the infant naked on the pavement, authorities said. Police were called and located Cruz nearby, prosecutors said.

The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of six years in state prison if convicted as charged.
