Charred Human Remains Found Near Mount Wilson Fire

The famed observatory in the mountains north of Pasadena was founded in the early 1900s

A charred body was found near the site of a brush fire earlier this week in the mountains northeast of Los Angeles, according to the sheriff's department.

The remains were recovered by search and rescue personnel in the Mount Wilson area, where a brush fire burned early Tuesday. The peak in Angeles National Forest is home to the historic Mount Wilson Observatory and broadcasting equipment.

The Los Angeles County Coroner will attempt to identify the remains. A cause of death was not immediately determined.

Firefighting helicopters soared over the peak early Tuesday, dropping water on the 50-acre fire. The Chantry Flats area was evacuated as a precaution. Red Box and Mount Wilson roads were closed, but no structures were threatened.

It was not immediately clear how the fire started.
