National Coffee Day: Steamy SoCal Sips

Savor offbeat brews and the opening of a new coffeehouse on Friday, Sept. 29.

National food holidays are as plentiful on the calendar as chips and dips on a party buffet, but, thus far, no one has come up with a national food holiday year.

For while holidays will take over an entire day, and one day only, there are some eatable, drinkable things in our life that are so iconic, and so constantly in our hands, that it feels right to give them a whole year.

Yeah, we're talking about coffee here, the morning brew, the bean scene, the flavorful friend to millions of waker-uppers.

Friday, Sept. 29 is National Coffee Day, and while National Coffee Year isn't yet an actual reality, you can honor the daylong occasion with a local coffeehouse opening, an offbeat coffee-inflected Eggs Benedict dish, or a $1 cup o' joe at a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at Terminal 5 at LAX.

Indeed, if you're flying out, or in, on Sept. 29, stop by the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf at Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport and snag a medium coffee for a buck.

Coffee and airports are as twosome-y as cheese and crackers, so a lot of people will be up on this deal, for sure.

Speaking of Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, The Guys in Blue from SoCal Honda Dealers will call upon four area locations to participate in some Random Acts of Helpfulness on Sept. 29. This means they'll buy your coffee during a set window at a set location.

If you'd like to mark the holiday with an offbeat coffee-infused dish or drink? Otium has a Cold Brew Martini, a libation that features OM dark chocolate, Stumptown coffee, and Absolut.

And at Viceroy Santa Monica, a special coffee-themed menu was dreamed up just for National Coffee Day. Think Eggs Benedict with Coffee Hollandaise Sauce, an English Muffin Sandwich with Coffee Bacon, and Espresso Cake.

Also? Stop by the Viceroy Santa Monica from 7 to 9 a.m. or 4 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 29 and get a free cup of Umbria coffee.

And the stylish new coffee shop set to debut on the auspicious occasion of National Coffee Day is Coffee For Sasquatch at Melrose Avenue and La Brea Boulevard.

But is there an actual Sasquatch in the house? A quick glance at the wall will reveal that answer.

A number of national coffee chains will also be sharing deals on Sept. 29, so check in with your morning go-to and see if a money-saving special awaits.
