Occupy LA Protesters Released from Jail

The City Attorney's Office has up to a year to charge protesters arrested during the Nov. 29 police raid

Several Occupy Los Angeles protesters arrested during Wednesday's early morning City Hall eviction were released from jail Friday.

Criminal charges have been filed against 46 protesters, according to the City Attorney’s Office. The remaining protesters were released since they had not been charged within a 48-hour window.

The City Attorney’s Office noted that it has up to a year to file charges against the protesters.

The Los Angeles Police Department received wide praise for the raid conducted Wednesday at the Occupy LA encampment at downtown’s City Hall Park. The majority of the more than 290 people who were arrested that day peacefully surrendered. Their bond was set for $5,000 per person.

The city began cleanup and restoration following the removal of the two-month-old encampment. Items left behind included signs, trash, mattresses and food.

A hazardous material team first surveyed the area due to some debris containing urine and feces.

According to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the price to clean up the area is “upwards of hundreds of thousands.”
