Suspect Still on the Loose After High Speed Chase Ends in Officer-Involved Shooting

Police are still looking for a suspect who escaped officers during the pursuit

Multiple officers fired their guns early Thursday after three robbery suspects led them on a high-speed pursuit in Garden Grove.

The shooting took place around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Lampson Avenue and West 8th Street in Garden Grove, where the pursuit ended after the truck crashed into a parked car and a pole, according to police.

No one was hit in the gunfire, said Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department.

Police arrested two men, both in their 20s, on suspicion of robbing and kidnapping a 34-year-old man. A third suspect who exited the vehicle during the pursuit still has not been found, officials said.

The victim pulled his vehicle over around 1:30 a.m. outside Taqueria De Anda restaurant after experiencing car problems, officials said. He had recently taken out hundreds of dollars from an ATM, police said.

One of the suspects entered the victim’s vehicle, pointed a weapon at him and told him to follow a nearby black Toyota pickup, police said. The pickup led the victim and suspect to the 3500 block of West Boyer Avenue where two other suspects from the pickup took money from the victim. The suspects also took more cash from the victim’s console and his keys.

Police responded to the robbery and the pursuit began for the three suspects who fled the area in the pickup, Bertagna said. Authorities chased the suspects through several cities including Westminster, Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach, before the driver exited the vehicle in Garden Grove and tried to flee on foot.

He and another suspect were taken into custody. A backpack he was wearing was recovered and two weapons were found inside. Another weapon, a rifle or possibly a firearm, was found inside the vehicle, Bertagna said.

The suspects were looking for money. "We're trying to figure out if (the victim) was targeted by the suspects or if it was a random street robbery," Bertagna said.

The victim who was robbed was unhurt, Bertagna said.
