Officers Injured After Crashing Into Hydrant, Flipping Cruiser in South LA

Two officers were injured Monday night in a rollover crash in South Los Angeles.

The officers were in a cruiser that sheared a hydrant and overturned about 7:45 p.m. in the 6000 block of South Vermont Avenue, near the intersection of 61th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

One officer was trapped in the wreckage and was freed by firefighters, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Both officers were in stable condition when taken to a hospital, according to LAPD Officer Mike Lopez.

The officers, with lights and sirens blaring as they responded to a call, collided with a minivan before hitting a light pole and then shearing a fire hydrant. The people in the minivan were able to walk away, and the two male officers only suffered cuts and bruises but no broken bones.

It was not immediately clear who was to blame for the crash, with cameras inside the patrol car likely to be used in the investigation of the incident.
