Suspected Car Thief Shot, Killed in North Hollywood

Homicide detectives are trying to determine if it was a justified shooting

A suspected car thief was killed Saturday in a shooting near a North Hollywood motel, authorities said.

The shooting was reported just before 6 p.m. at the Flamingo Motel in the 6100 block of Lankershim Boulevard, a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department's North Hollywood Station said.

A man was reportedly breaking into a car in the back of an auto parts and speedometer shop located nearby.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

It's unknown if the store worker had a permit for his weapon, police said.

The employee and the store owner were both handcuffed and taken to the police station for questioning.

It's unclear if the store employee, who told police he fired at least four rounds, will face any charges.
