Opening: Free Twilight Concerts on the Pier

Mayer Hawthorne, Mavis Staples, and several other stars'll croon near the waves.

What a delightful difference a year can make.

Just 12 months ago, when the Twilight Concerts series was ramping up at Santa Monica Pier, there were many ways to arrive at the bustling destination, including bus, car, bike, and on foot.

Now? Expo Line has reached Santa Monica, which means that if you were ever daunted by the idea of parking near the free music spectacular, a longtime staple of Thursday nights in July and August, be daunted no longer: You've got another no-drive option to get to DTSM.

Once you've hopped off your train, and wended your way over to the pier, this is who you shall see: Mayer Hawthorne will bring his retro-sweet R&B sounds to the pay-nada series beginning on Thursday, July 7 — that's opening night, yep — and the Ohio Players shall summon the spirit of disco on Sept. 8, the farewell night of the series.

Between those two dates? Børns, The Psychedelic Furs, Proteje & The Indiggnation, Natalia LaFourcade, Rüfüs Du Sol, Mavis Staples, Save Ferris, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

The events run from 7 to 10 o'clock each Thursday, but getting there sooner than that, as in notably sooner, is as much a tradition as live tunes on the historic pier. (No joke on the tradition part; this is the 32nd annual go-around for Twilight Concerts.)

Snapchat is presenting the 2016 series.
