“Out of Control” Windmill Blows Plan for Sunday Drive

An "out of control windmill" threatened traffic on the highway between Los Angeles County's high desert and the San Joaquin Valley, a CHP dispatcher in Bakersfield said Sunday.

The malfunctioning electric generator forced closure of state Highway 58 in both directions between Mojave -- about 45 miles north of Lancaster -- and Tehachapi.

The CHP dispatcher said the windmill is spinning too fast and might fly apart.

Traffic from LA was detoured to westbound Rosamond Boulevard to Willow Springs Road, then north to Tehachapi.

Thousands of electric-generating windmills have been installed along both side of Highway 58 in Tehachapi Pass, the main route linking the Inland Empire and Antelope Valley to the central and northern parts of California.

At midafternoon, the CHP was calling the windmill's owners to see if it could be shut down.
