Are you mad for mod?
Appreciate architecture, art, design, and all things mid-century modern?
If so, hit the road for Palm Springs. The desert oasis is celebrating Modernism Week through Feb. 24.
Take in tours, talks, cocktails and classic cars. More than 350 events were designed to highlight, preserve and sustain modern living in the town made famous by Hollywood’s elite in the 1950’s.
A tiki treasure trove awaits at Royal Hawaiian Estates, one of many properties open for tours. Some units are meticulously preserved in all their 1960s glory (can you say not so mellow yellow?) while others have taken a modern twist on mid mod style.
Josh Agle, the artist better known as Shag, has a swanky vacation home on tour, best described as a Mai Tai come to life.
Explore classic modern architecture and high design renovations of quintessential midcentury properties by day, then enjoy martinis at Frank Sinatra’s estate at night. Yes, cocktail parties are happening at the storied home in the Movie Colony on the Feb. 23 and 24.
Proceeds go toward scholarships and preservation, so you can do some good while discovering desert gems.
