Pursued Driver Pulls Into Parking Space, Surrenders

Police chased the man into a Boyle Heights parking lot late Tuesday

A man is in custody Tuesday night after leading police on a low-speed chase through freeways and surface streets before finally parking his sport-utility vehicle in a Boyle Heights parking lot and surrendering to police.

The chase began shortly before 11 p.m. when officers tried to pull over the driver on suspicion of wreckless driving, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department East LA Station.

Winding along the westbound 10 Freeway out of the San Gabriel area, the pursuit's speed hovered around 40 mph.

When the driver transitioned from the freeway onto surface streets in Boyle Heights, an officer tried unsuccessfully to perform a PIT manuever on the SUV, which then sped up through a residential area.

The driver pulled into a parking lot on Alcazar Street near Crusado Lane. He circled the lot before parking his white SUV between a pair of cars, throwing his keys on the ground and surrendering to police.

The man was taken into custody.
