Kayaker Killed in Collision With Boat Off Marina Del Rey

A woman in a kayak was struck and killed by a powerboat during the peak of the Labor Day holiday Monday in Marina del Rey.

The accident took place at about 1:10 p.m. near the south jetty, said Lt. Deryl Walker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

"At this point, there is no indication that a crime occurred, but the investigation was still ongoing," Walker said.

The name of the woman was withheld pending notification of next of kin. The operator of the boat was not cited, Walker said.

Two people in their 60s were aboard the 50-foot vessel that struck the kayaker and at first didn't know what had happened until people in a nearby fishing boat alerted them. They spoke to investigators for a couple hours, but authorities said it appeared they were not speeding or under the influence of alcohol.
