Possible ‘Person of Interest' Detained in Fatal Stabbing of Woman at Rolling Hills Estates Shopping Mall

Police said Friday that they have detained an individual in Harbor City who matches the description of man sought after a woman in her 60s was fatally stabbed at a shopping mall in Rolling Hills Estates.

The man was being questioned after he was found near Pacific Coast Highway and President Avenue. The man appeared to be wearing a hat and jacket similar to those worn by a subject seen in security camera photos released late Thursday in connection with the stabbing.

The man yelled at deputies and asked why he was being detained as he was placed in the rear of a sheriff's department patrol car.

NBC4 is attempting to gather more details.

The attack took place shortly after 12:20 p.m. Thursday, at the Promenade shopping mall in the 500 block of Deep Valley Drive, said Deputy Daneglo Robinson of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The woman was found in her SUV parked inside the Promenade's parking garage. It's unknown if the woman was a victim of a robbery, according to the sheriff's department.

The woman died at the scene. She was identified Friday morning as 66-year-old Susan Leeds, of Rancho Palos Verdes.

The sheriff's department released a photo of a person of interest late Thursday night. It's a picture of a man wearing a red Atlanta Falcons cap and black jacket and holding a cup of coffee. The photo was taken from security video at the mall. The man could be a suspect or a witness and sheriff's officials asked the man to come forward so they can talk to him.

This was the first homicide on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in nine years, the Daily Breeze reported. Rolling Hills Estates Mayor Britt Huff told the newspaper the stabbing was "unbelievable."

Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the death to call them at -323-890-5500.
