Rolly Crump: Disney Legend Exhibit

Admire a host of pieces, artworks, and treasures created by the iconic Imagineer, at the Oceanside Museum of Art.

DISNEYLAND PARK... didn't spring into glorious being, fully formed and ready for visitors, from thin air back in 1955. Nor has it ever stop evolving, changing, or adding new elements, attractions, and guest-delighting details. Both of those true statements — that people of great imagination built the famous theme park, and continue to shape and contribute to its charm and character — can be seen daily in Anaheim, but getting to know the work of an Imagineering icon, at length, is a rarer treat. For sure, to see a bit of Imagineer Rolly Crump's talent you can visit it's a small world, or Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, and soak in the colorful splendor that fill both Disneyland attractions. You can even watch "Peter Pan" or "Lady and the Tramp" to see Mr. Crump's early Disney contributions, back when he was an assistant animator. But to enjoy a singular, full-scale Rolly Crump experience, you'll want to ride your favorite boat or roller coaster or perhaps your car to the...

OCEANSIDE MUSEUM OF ART, where "Rolly Crump: It's Kind of a Cute Story" is on display through Feb. 18, 2018. The "good-natured contrarian" and "visual provocateur" has been behind so much of what we today think of as Disneyland's particular brand of magic-making, and each item in the exhibit conveys Mr. Crump's fabulous, big-vision'd outlook. Paintings, designs, models, and more treasures fill up a large slice of the art institution, making it a merry day out for Disney fans, Rolly Crump admirers, and anyone who wants to see what the spark looks like, that necessary spark that happens before a major theme park attraction is built. Could you do both the Oceanside Museum of Art and Disneyland Park in a single day? It would be a busy day, no doubt, but the two locations are just over an hour apart, if there's not too much traffic. And no, a boat from it's a small world won't whisk you between the exhibit and theme park, but one can dream of traveling the 5 Freeway in this whimsical manner.
