Rookie Fontana Police Officer Killed in Off-Duty Motorcycle Wreck

A 26-year-old rookie Fontana police officer and former Marine died after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing Tuesday.

Thomas Chamberlin, who served in Iraq from 2008 to 2009 and again in Afghanistan in 2010 before being honorably discharged, was off-duty when he veered off the roadway of Highway 39 and crashed into the side of a mountain, according to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez of the California Highway Patrol.

Chamberlin was airlifted to the LAC+USC Medical Center in critical condition with severe head injuries, officials said. He later died at the hospital.

The 2006 Diamond Bar High School graduate was unmarried with no children. He is survived by his parents Tom and Guadalupe.

Chamberlin was hired by the Fontana Police Department last June.

Officials said Chamberlin requested that any donations be made to Catholic Answers Charity in San Diego.
