SUV Fatally Strikes Toddler in Crosswalk in Arleta

The 3-year-old boy and his father were hand-in-hand as they walked through a crosswalk before the vehicle struck the child.

A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured and his father who was with him sustained minor injuries when they were hit by a vehicle while walking in the Arleta area Friday.

The crash occurred about 4:25 p.m. in the 8900 block of Varna Avenue, near the intersection with Chase Street, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison.

The boy died from his injuries at a hospital, Madison said. The child's name was withheld pending family notification.

His father was not taken to a hospital.

"There's a stop sign right here," detective Bill Bustos of the LAPD Valley Traffic Division said. "Apparently, according to witnesses the driver did not make a complete stop or did not stop for the sign."

The victims were in a crosswalk when they were hit, said LAPD Sgt. M. Whittemore of Valley Traffic Division.

The driver, who had two children with her in the vehicle, stopped at the scene and was the one who called 911 to alert paramedics and police. Officials let her leave as they focused on the grieving family.

"We are in the process of trying to get as much info as possible from the parents," Bustos said. "As you can imagine, they're distraught."
