San Fernando Man Fatally Attacked, Carjacked

"It was just kind of like an awful scream for help," said a neighbor who heard the victim shriek

A 57-year-old man was fatally attacked and carjacked outside his San Fernando home over the weekend, police said Tuesday.

Dario Rosas was parking his SUV in the 11300 block of Acala Avenue about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when someone attacked him and drove away in his 1997 Toyota RAV4, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said he heard a shriek.

"It was just kind of like an awful scream for help," he said.

The neighbor found Rosas on the ground with blood flowing from a gash on his head.

"He was already out of it already and I guess his body was just grasping for air to survive," the neighbor said.

Firefighters who responded to the scene took Rosas to the hospital, but he died on the way there.

The SUV was found abandoned a few miles away in Panorama City and was impounded for evidence.

It was unclear if the victim knew his assailant, police said. Police described the attacker as a male, but had no further details on a description.

Neighbors described Rosas as a "nice man" who lived with his elderly mother.

Anyone with information was asked to call Det. Gene Parshall of the LAPD's Mission Homicide Unit at 818-838-9954.
